Compact Binocular Choices

Compact binoculars, just like all the other types of binoculars, offer a multitude of choices. When you go out to shop for them, you will be surprised at the range that is available. Whatever your reason for buying binoculars, you will probably find that there is a compact binocular to suit your needs. Whether you like birdwatching, the opera, watching sports or hiking, a pair of compact binoculars could prove to be very useful.

What Magnification Should I Look For?

One important aspect where compact binoculars lose out over other types is magnification. You will find that binoculars in the compact range are very much at the low end of the scale for magnification. It is a trade off between optical power and the convenience of the small size.  But something with ten times magnification can be very small and still perform quite well in most situations

What About Lens Diameter?

Lens diameter is also something to look at when looking for a pair of compact binoculars. A larger lens is usually better because it allows more light to come through. The more light you have, the better your image will be. However, most compact binoculars the lenses range in size from 18 to 25 millimetres, and sometimes this can be too small for use in low light conditions. If a lens does not let enough light in, it can have a major impact on image quality. If you will be working in dim light, however, it’s best to get compact binoculars with the highest power magnification possible.

Zoom?

Some cheaper models of compact binoculars have a fixed magnification and do not have the facility to zoom. This means that the object you wish to view will have to be at the correct range in order to be in focus. If you are say, at a football game, and have no control over your distance from the play, this can be a problem. The small exit pupil of compact binoculars also makes it difficult to follow moving action.

What About The Quality?

Compact binoculars, like the other types, vary tremendously in price. There is no need to spend excessive amounts on binoculars, but something that seems like a bargain might end up costing you later. If you will make use of your binoculars often, it may be worth going for the extra quality. And you should always try before you buy.
